Historical Information[]
Cocytus is one of the five rivers of Hades in Greek Mythology. Additionally, Cocytus was the ninth and final circle of Hell in Dante's Divine Comedy. The circle was home to those condemned as traitors, and was represented as a frozen lake. It was further subdivided into four rounds: Caina, for traitors to blood relatives, Antenora, for traitors to country, Ptolomea, for traitors to guests, and Judecca, for traitors to masters and benefactors. Each round is of course named for one of its famed denizens. At the center, Satan himself is punished even as he punishes Brutus and Cassius, betrayers of Julius Caesar, and Judas Iscariot, betrayer of Christ.
In Final Fantasy XI, the Resist Ice and Ice Spikes attributes on the Cocytus pole are appropriate given its association with the frozen center of Hell.
