Historical Background

A grenadier is a term used for a soldier who belongs to a special regiment or corps or for a soldier who uses grenades. They originated in the late 1600s as specialized assault troopers for sieges. They would throw grenades and storm breaches in enemy defenses. They were considered an 'elite' position in military ranks because back when the position was created, grenades were heavier and a grenadier had to be able to stand on the frontline, light the fuse, wait until the right time (to avoid the enemy being able to throw the grenade elsewhere), and throw the grenade at the enemy. As a result, taller individuals and people with good throwing skills were recruited to be grenadiers. Grenadiers were also equipped with firearms and wore a cap resembling a bishop's mitre.

The role of grenadiers declined after the early 1700s, but eventually re-emerged in the early 20th century with the advent of the grenade launcher. Grenadier is a French word derived from "grenade".
